FCC has amended the rules concerning Amateur Radio operations in emergency drills

by AJ4GT on Jul.16, 2010, under ARES / RACES, CERT, Club Information, Documents, Skywarn, Training

Correct posting to FCC site is:

http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2010/db0714/FCC-10-124A1.doc

The FCC has amended the rules concerning Amateur Radio operations in
emergency drills as follows:
“A station licensee or control station operator may participate on behalf of an employer in an emergency preparedness or disaster readiness test or drill, limited to the duration and scope of such test or drill, and operational testing immediately prior to such test or drill.  Tests or drills that are not government-sponsored are limited to a total time of one hour per week, except that no more than twice in any calendar year, they may be conducted for a period not to exceed 72 hours.”  See
http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2010/db0714/FCC-10-124A1.pdf
We hope that the restrictions here will prevent commercial use of Amateur Radio or our equipment by employers.  Keep tuned as ARRL  studies implications of this new ruling.    Gene W4AYK

No Atlanta District Net this Month

by AJ4GT on Jul.04, 2010, under ARES / RACES, CERT, Training, Weather

Gentlemen,

Let’s take a break next Sunday from our monthly District Atlanta ARES.  Our attendance is likely to be lower than normal due to the fact that folks are celebrating our freedoms with 4th of July activities.  So everyone can now fire up the grill, grab a beverage of their choice, light up a sparkler or two and celebrate the 4th without having to remember to take a break at 4:00PM to check in to the NET.

That lets Cherokee County off the hot seat for July’s Net, but we’ll give Steve Reynolds, W4CNG, an early Christmas present and have Cherokee County cover the December 5th Net.

We’ve all just finished a long hot Field Day weekend, we have the HURREX 2010 drill you might be participating in this week, so let’s enjoy the holiday.

If each of you will reply to me (not a reply all) so I’ll know that I haven’t missed anyone and then let your members know, maybe we can keep the number of folks looking for the Net next Sunday to a minimum.

Everyone have a safe and enjoyable 4th,

Steve G./N4SEG

Another reason to take drills seriously

by AJ4GT on Jul.02, 2010, under ARES / RACES

I worked this drill many times.  Read the full article, it is pretty interesting.  N3BQB is was the EC I replaced who then replaced me when I moved to South Carolina.  York county has been working with FLDigi for some time, they have a digital FM net that runs weekly on the KVHF repeater.  I guess it turned out to be good practice.

ARRL   07/01/2010

Just two days before the start of ARRL Field Day, Amateur Radio operators in South Central Pennsylvania were preparing for a regularly scheduled bi-annual exercise involving the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, located on the Susquehanna River. The drill is required as part of the licensing process for the power plant.

“Nuclear power plants have to do well in emergency planning as part of their licensing requirements,” said ARRL Eastern Pennsylvania Section ARES® District 5 Emergency Coordinator Daniel Sullivan, KO1D. “For hams to shine in that setting is more important than Field Day to the non-hams who are community or agency leaders within the public safety community, and it shows what Amateur Radio can do.”
